AI-ready was the right first step

For several years now, life sciences organizations have been working toward becoming “AI-ready.” That effort wasn’t optional. If your data is inconsistent, siloed, or missing lineage, AI will either fail outright or produce results you can’t trust. And in regulated environments, trust is not a nice-to-have; it’s the prerequisite.

What an execution layer actually is

An execution layer is the digital foundation that operationalizes work across people, systems, and automation. It’s not just integration, and it’s not just automation. It’s orchestration + governance.

Practically, an execution layer does three things, and you can map them directly to the scenario above.

First, it gives the organization a shared operational language.
People often call this an ontology. Here’s the practical definition that matters: a data model defines how information is stored, while an ontology defines what it means. If “batch,” “sample,” “method,” “deviation,” “specification,” “version,” and “material lot” mean different things across systems, then humans spend their time translating, and AI spends its time guessing. Neither scales. A shared operational language lets the enterprise, and its AI, reason consistently across lab, manufacturing, and quality.

Second, it manages workflow state.
Regulated work is stateful. What can happen next depends on what happened before, what’s currently true, what’s on hold, what requires review, and what’s permitted under policy.
